This first week in June had brought a new problem. It was not the weather alone which made his face look thin and strained. Pain ... not strange to him exactly, he had had his share of broken fingers, broken ribs, sprains, arthritis in his back and hips which had meant a bit of sweat at times, but pain could be sharp with¬out bringing fear.

New People in an Old World! New collection of stories written after many years spent in varied environments. Some with a Cornish influence, the source not surprising as it was my family's place of birth and where I spent my youth, watching and absorbing words and actions from surrounding friends and family. I saw how they dealt with the current dramas in their lives. Later it was the significance of words and actions of people I met during my work so far away from home. These were new sounds, apart from my Cornish dialect there were phrases I heard frequently in the community, a rural valley or in the mountain vicinity. The phrases became important and at times lingered. I wondered if there was any experience which had instigated their words and, in wondering, found these stories. I have been helped in the preparation of this collection, generously, by my niece Patricia Mee, and must express real gratitude for all the hard work involving her time and con¬centration.
